sight Yúngāng Shíkū
Yungang Grottoes
Fifty-three caves of fifth-century Buddhas in a sandstone cliff. Half a day at least.
Bus 3 from the old town or a taxi. Caves 5 and 6 are the painted, crowded ones; caves 16 to 20, the earliest, have the giant figures, with the 14-metre Buddha of Cave 20 open to the sky. Go early and walk the cliff from east to west.
