悬空寺

Xuánkōng Sì

A temple on stilts fifty metres up a cliff face, fifteen centuries old. Sixty-five kilometres south-east.

Reservation needed

Entry to the grounds is unlimited; climbing the temple itself is capped and sells out on holidays. Book online.

Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian halls on one set of beams. The walkways are narrow and the drop is real. Taxi or arranged car from Datong; combine with the Yingxian pagoda for a full day.
