neighbourhood Shāmiàn
Shamian Island
A sandbank of colonial villas and banyan trees. Quiet, shaded, and a good first walk.
The former British and French concession, an island by two short bridges. Church, consulates and trading houses along leafy streets, with locals doing tai chi under the trees. An hour, best early or at dusk.
