Kumbum Monastery
One of the great Gelug monasteries, with a row of eight white stupas at the gate and halls of butter sculpture.
Founded in 1560 on the spot where Tsongkhapa was born. Pilgrims prostrate along the kora; visitors follow the numbered route through the Great Golden Tiled Hall and the butter-sculpture hall. Bus from the city or a taxi. Half a day.
