Houhai and the hutongs
Rent a bike, get lost on purpose, end at the Drum Tower.
The lakes are ringed with bars that are best avoided after dark. The lanes behind them are the point: Yandai Xiejie for a look, then the quieter hutongs east of the Drum Tower for a proper wander.
