Trains from Shanghai Hongqiao take 45 to 60 minutes, which is why the lake is a Shanghai suburb every Saturday. Midweek the same walk is a different city.
Book the train a day or two ahead in season; your passport is the ticket, so go through the foreign-passport lane at the gates rather than the automatic ones. Hangzhou East is on the metro, about twenty minutes from the lake.
