Henan Museum
The province that held most of ancient China's capitals, in one pyramid-shaped building. Free, and worth half a day.
Start with the Jiahu bone flutes, cut from crane wing bones nine thousand years ago and still playable, then the Shang and Zhou bronzes: the Fu Hao owl vessel, the lotus-and-crane pot, the cloud-pattern altar table cast in lost wax. The Huaxia Ancient Music ensemble plays replicas of the instruments downstairs a few times a day.
