The villa island: consulates, churches, piano museums and lanes with no traffic at all.

Visitors take the ferry from Dongdu terminal to Sanqiutian pier; real-name tickets sell out on holidays, so book online a day or two ahead.

Climb Sunlight Rock for the view, then get lost. The best of it is away from Longtou Road: Fujian Road, the Catholic church, the old Japanese consulate. Piano music drifts out of the villas; the island produced half the country's concert pianists.
