The German quarter is a grid of granite streets on a slope above the harbour, and the way to see it is on foot: Zhanqiao pier, then up past St Michael's Cathedral, the old villas and the governor's residence, ending at Signal Hill for the red roofs from above.
It is about two hours with stops and it is all uphill, so go in the morning. Badaguan, the villa quarter by the sea, is a separate, flatter walk for the afternoon.
