neighbourhood Nántóu Gǔchéng
Nantou Ancient City
The county seat that governed this coast for sixteen centuries, with an urban village grown inside its walls.
Xin'an county was run from here — everything from these hills to Hong Kong island — from the fourth century until the border was drawn in 1898. What survives is the south gate, one straight main street, a small county museum, and the dense self-built housing that filled the walls after 1980. The 2020 restoration tidied the street and left the village, so shops and old residents share the same lanes. Free, open all day, shops from about ten. Metro line 12 to Nantou Ancient City or Zhongshan Park.
