day trip Dàpéng Suǒchéng
Dapeng Fortress
A walled Ming garrison town on the eastern peninsula, an easy walk from the beaches.
Built in 1394 against coastal raiders and lived in ever since. The granite gates, the lanes and several admirals' mansions survive, and the fortress gave the city its other name, Pengcheng. Free and open all day, with a few paid house museums inside. Make a day of it with Jiaochangwei beach next door or Yangmeikeng further round the coast. Two hours from the centre on the metro plus a bus, or ninety minutes by car.
