Dapeng Fortress

大鹏所城
Dàpéng Suǒchéng

A walled Ming garrison town on the eastern peninsula, an easy walk from the beaches.

Reservation needed

The town is free, but driving onto the Dapeng peninsula on weekends and public holidays needs a licence-plate booking through the Shenzhen traffic police WeChat account; arriving by bus or taxi does not. Xichong beach takes its own bookings in summer.

Built in 1394 against coastal raiders and lived in ever since. The granite gates, the lanes and several admirals' mansions survive, and the fortress gave the city its other name, Pengcheng. Free and open all day, with a few paid house museums inside. Make a day of it with Jiaochangwei beach next door or Yangmeikeng further round the coast. Two hours from the centre on the metro plus a bus, or ninety minutes by car.
