Zhenguo Temple
A quiet country temple whose main hall is one of the oldest timber buildings standing in China.
About 12 km northeast of town, and one of the two temples UNESCO lists together with the walled city. The main hall, the Wanfo Hall (万佛殿), dates from the tenth century, in the Five Dynasties. Look up at the deep, layered brackets under the eaves.
Go by taxi or a car arranged through your guesthouse, and combine it with Shuanglin Temple on the other side of town for a half day. Hours and ticket rules change with the season, so check before you go.
