Gongchen Bridge and the Grand Canal

拱宸桥
Gǒngchén Qiáo

A stone arch at the southern end of the Grand Canal, with old canal-side lanes and the canal museum beside it.

Hangzhou is where the Grand Canal ends, and Gongchen Bridge marks the spot: a three-arch stone bridge with barges still passing underneath. The lanes on the west bank have been restored as a quiet canal quarter of teahouses and small museums, and the China Grand Canal Museum stands beside the bridge. Away from West Lake and its crowds; come late in the afternoon and stay for the lights on the water.
