Shaxi Ancient Town

沙溪古镇
Shāxī Gǔzhèn

A Bai market town on the old Tea Horse Road, about halfway between Dali and Lijiang, with its square, theatre stage and temple restored.

Sideng Street and its market square were a caravan stop on the Tea Horse Road. The square, its old opera stage, Xingjiao Temple and the town gates were restored in a Chinese–Swiss project after the World Monuments Fund put the site on its watch list in the early 2000s. It is quieter than Dali or Lijiang, and the valley around it is good for an easy walk or cycle between villages. It is too far for a comfortable day trip, so stay a night or stop on the way between Dali and Lijiang. Check transport from Jianchuan and any entry rules before you go.
